RICHARD RIOS
I'm an artist who specializes in narrative and sequential art... basically, I thrive on drawing ideas all the way out. Advertising, film, interactive and experiential media, and occasionally animation. My BFA is in Directing, so I understand composition and creating shots that are interesting and actually shootable.

Obviously with the way the themed industry works, most of the cool stuff I've worked on is still probably years away from being showable. And some of the stuff that is* in this section is pretty old at this point. But hopefully this gives you a good idea of what I do, and can do.

ART DIRECTION

Speaking of things that are years away from showing, this section might be the most bare for now. Why start with it? Because it's the thing I'm most proud of at the moment.
SO here's some original concept art on an original idea I've worked up just for this in the meantime.

This may be in the Art Direction section, but it's really more of a direction direction thing. The art style was established, but I came in and decided the shots, illustrated and animated.

RIDES / ATTRACTIONS

Here's an incredibly unique experience in an equally unique format.

A full 360 degree view meant that we had to figure out a way to plan out whats going on in front of and* behind our guests (as well as on top and below).

I ended up going with a full 360 illustration for each storyboard, which allowed us to look around in VR and narrow in on what's going on at all times at all points of this massive screen.

You can see what a single board looked like here < and there were dozens for each moment!

One of the highlights of my career and one of the most challenging (fun).

Here's the work I did on the preshow for the same project. A lot more straightforward, but still a fun one. Loved how many of the little acting moments I dropped in for this character "Verne" made it to the final!

Years before it's opening, and before Epic Universe was even announced, I was flown out to Orlando to help ideate on a new Harry Potter ride. It would eventually become
"Battle at the Ministry".

Even though my time there was so short it could hardly be said it happened at all, it was an incredible experience I'll never forget. Seemingly nothing from those sketch sessions made it into the final, but you can still see all the bones we talked about.

I'll always have my many ways to defeat Umbridge sketches, even if none of them were seriously considered!

MULTI-SCREEN

To call this project multi-screen is an understatement. At BRC I was tasked with helping plan out the media for the entirety of the USA Pavilion at the 2025 Word's Expo in Osaka, Japan.

We had rooms with projection screens surrounding you, we had walls full of screens, TV screens in hallways, and even two story tall LED screens surrounding our guests on 4 sides.

We turned it into quite the experience including real students, fog effects, and the return of the Moon rocks from the '70 Osaka World's fair.
(not that I had anything to do with that)

A challenge to say the least, but a fun project that seemed so daunting at first.

One of the most unique screens I've been tasked with filling.

The theater starts with shard shaped screens, then the entire theater rotates through a projection show, then lands on large LED screens with moving elements for the conclusion.

I was lucky enough to stay on through the storyboard phase and even into concepting the looks of the show.

PROJECTION MAPPING

Created for the 20th Anniversary celebration for Disneyland Hong Kong, I was tasked with helping plan out an additional tag to the already popular 'Momentous' projection show.

It started as a short section in front of the show, then quickly ballooned into a 20 minute spectacular. After I finished working on it, though, it was apparently whittled back down into something more
in-between.

Debuting in November 2022, Expressions of America was a projection mapping / sound and lights show as well as a fantastic look into a few heartfelt WWII stories.

Biggest challenge for me on these massive projection surfaces was simply to not make things too* big.

OOH ADVERTISING

A fun project in an unusual format. This was a fresh format for both myself and the creative team, so a lot of problem solving went into this 3D ad on Times Square's 'Big Kahuna'.

INTERACTIVES
Interactives are always a fun challenge. Not just to figure out how they work, but also to figure out how to illustrate that for a client.

These concepts were from a project for the Saudi Ministry of Culture. While the project was rocky and ultimately halted, the team was fantastic and some great ideas came out of it.
